Natural History Museum...

July 23, 2015

I had a little time off whilst down in London a couple of weeks ago, and my favourite thing to do when I get a chance is to have a wander around the museums (In order my top three are: The John Soane, Natural History and the V&A!), and as I was staying at my friends on the West side...I could walk to Kensington quite easily!

One of my favourite things about museums, is the way they display and categorise the exhibits - I know i'm a little weird! - but theres nothing more satisfying than a neatly laid out display of the useful data (now you know why i'm such a stickler when it comes to my sketch books etc!)

The way the animal anatomy section is set out blows my mind - the details, data, measurements and though that has gone into the placement of exhibition pieces is beautiful...I tried to find some sheep-y things but to no avail...maybe I was in the wrong section! Maybe I could create a whole section dedicated to the different breeds of Britain...a girl can dream!

I'm off to take some snapshots of my sketchbooks to get some more inspiration of how to display further work...

Sustainable Manchester wood adventure...

July 23, 2015

I've been working on a little photography project with Tree Station, getting some of their amazing products ready for their website. A visit to their Manchester based sustainable tree works (Tree Station), was a great experience. They are a fantastic company, and provide tree work, as well as sustainable timber, wooden products and links to designers who work with good wood!

The guys that work there are so passionate about what they do - and just poking around the yard gave me some great ideas as to how to incorporate their passion into my work...watch this space!!

British breeds needed...

June 30, 2015

My research is coming along well, I am really enjoying having the time to connect with people, manufacturers and other designers, whilst researching all about British sheep breeds and their wool! (Did you know that there are over 60 pure breeds kept in the UK today?! - thats a lot of different fibre characteristics to look at and learn about!)
I am still on the look out for the above yarns/fleece - if you have any contacts or know where I can get hold of any I would love you to get in contact with me!

Soay sheep fleece delivery...

June 25, 2015

I have found that best way to find things is to ask friends who know friends who know friends who do things/have things that I am currently looking for! So when my amazing friend Becca put me in contact with a great artist Christine who happened to keep a few Soay sheep, I jumped at the chance to talk to her. She has 3 beauties in her back yard (well paddock!), and donates the fleeces from them each year - and lucky for me this year it was me! She very kindly let us come and visit, take some pictures and also pick up the fleece! I can't wait to use it in my next project (lots of ideas for it...just not sure when I can squeezed it in!)

Look at these lovely ladies...

Coldharbour Mill visit...

May 19, 2015

I was lucky enough to have a little break away in Cornwall a few weeks ago, and on our way back up North we took a little detour to visit Coldharbour Mill. We got there just in time for a quick tour around by the lovely (and very knowledgeable) Ian. He took us through the whole Worsted process and the history behind each machine. It was a fantastic mill, and was in the middle of spinning up some beautiful modern yarns for a knitwear designer's final collection (i'll keep my eyes peeled and link it in when they are released!). It was fantastic to see the history and skills honed over generations being used in a very  modern context! Well worth a visit...

Research work progress...

May 19, 2015

I don't talk much about my research work on this blog (although lots of my work/pleasure time overlaps and I am really lucky that I get to research what I love...wool, knitting and sheep!!

There are a few exciting new ventures coming in the not so distant future and it feels like some of my hard work might finally pay off...I have been getting very excited about some of the breeds of sheep I have been working with, and sampling with them has been a great adventure, heres a little glimpse of the work so far!

Spring time...

Sunbathing frog...

The best time of year for going out to spot all the beautiful new lambs out in the fields!
We went a little too early to get any good pics of the new flock, but to update and make this blog lovely and spring-like here's a few photos from out and about...

Blaze Farm Spinning adventure...

March 20, 2015

This Wednesday, I had the chance to head over to Blaze Farm, near Macclesfield, to pick up some hand spun yarns, for my British Breed research, which we're spun by the hugely talented Diane, from The Murmuring Wheel. Not only did I get a bag full of beautiful yarn, but I also got to try some of Blaze Farm's ice cream - the chocolate orange was AMAZING!

I'm really excited to begin sampling with these yarns...pictures to follow!

Under the microscope...

March 20, 2015

I have spent the past few weeks getting my science head on for my research!

I have had access to a great prototype microscope that connects straight to your iPhone (genius!), and had lots of fun testing all the fibres I have collected underneath the lens! (Many thanks to my lovely lovely science friend!)

The photographs have come out great, and the difference between breeds makes for really interesting viewing!

BIG KNITTING...

February 26, 2015

I love experimenting with different British Breed yarns, and after doing some top secret knitting swatches for a new project (EXCITING!!), using some lovely Whitefaced Woodland yarn, I had a bit of time (unusual!) to have a little play around! I had been using the 4ply yarn as quite a delicate almost lacey stitch maker, so I went the complete opposite way, and used my knitting noddy to create a really chunky french knitted 'yarn'!

Using 20mm needles here's the progress so far...
